Belagavi Prepares Historic Session, Former US Prez Obama Likely to Attend
Belagavi is set to host a special joint legislative session in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) meeting, chaired by Mahatma Gandhi in 1924.
This historic session will take place at the Suvarna Soudha in Belagavi, and notable international dignitaries are anticipated to attend, including former U.S. President Barack Obama, who has been formally invited by Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
According to H.K. Patil, Karnataka’s Law Minister and Chairman of the Centenary Committee, the Chief Minister has already extended a personal invitation to Obama in writing.
Patil, speaking to the press in Gadag, shared that the date of the session will be finalized based on Obama’s availability. Highlighting Gandhi’s global influence, Patil emphasized the significance of having Obama, a well-known admirer of Gandhi, at the event. “Gandhi was a leader not only of India but of the world, and it would be an honor to have someone inspired by his ideals present at this occasion,” he stated.
In tribute to Gandhi’s impact on Karnataka, where he visited over 120 locations, the centenary celebrations will include the construction of memorials at 40 sites across the state. On December 26 and 27, a torch rally representing Gandhi’s legacy will culminate in Belagavi, accompanied by gatherings focused on youth, women, and community harmony.
The event also pays homage to Gandhi’s legacy in Karnataka, where he presided over the 39th AICC session in Belagavi before independence. During that session, Gandhi’s call for collective action inspired many to join the freedom struggle, marking a crucial moment in India’s fight for independence. The centenary celebrations will include a tribute to Karnataka’s cultural heritage, featuring the song “Udayavagali Cheluva Kannada Nadu”, first sung at the original AICC session by renowned singer Gangubai Hangal.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has appointed H.K. Patil to lead the centenary committee. The committee plans to visit Belagavi on November 5 to oversee arrangements, with centenary events scheduled to continue until October 2, 2025.
